So on Friday night, Scott and I had a bit of a trip into the past. We went and saw a band we’d seen many times before, but not (in my case) in the last ten years. Big Sugar was playing in town, and I’m glad I got to see them again. Things are different now; Gordie Johnson is no longer the Hugo Boss wearing suave blues guitarist, he’s gone what looks like completely rasta. His voice also isn’t what it used to be, but they still sounded GREAT! We had a great time, and I remember the Republik fondly. Big Sugar Revolution!

I don’t understand this. I’m going to bed too late tonight. Again. And why? American Idol. I don’t get it. This is the show’s tenth season, and I have never watched it before… ever! Not even a passing interest or a care about what was happening. The closest I’d ever gotten to this show was watching Steve Carell yell “Kelly Clarkson!!” in the throes of agony of getting his chest waxed in the 40 Year-Old Virgin. Now, I can’t stop.
Of course, I’ve seen some of the horrible auditions, because there have been some spectacularly bad moments on that program. But an entire episode? Where I actually consciously chose to give some of my quiet, hard-earned evening to Ryan Seacrest, Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez (yeah the last two are new, but still)?? Like, I went out of my way to watch it, and I haven’t missed an episode.
It started by just watching the auditions… Entertaining. Bus crashes and surprise standouts, all. And Steven Tyler was quite possibly the funniest thing ever, or maybe it was just that he was the off-the-wall counterpoint to Jennifer Lopez’s straightforward sweetness. I don’t know what happened but here I am, months later, sitting in front of my TV, critiquing with Adena (quite seriously) each performance as it passes.
I’m too invested now. I have to make it to the end. But again, why now, in the tenth season??
I have my favorites, how about you? I’m so embarrassed.
