and now, for something completely different.

American Idol – WTH?

I don’t understand this. I’m going to bed too late tonight. Again.  And why? American Idol. I don’t get it. This is the show’s tenth season, and I have never watched it before… ever! Not even a passing interest or a care about what was happening.  The closest I’d ever gotten to this show was watching Steve Carell yell “Kelly Clarkson!!” in the throes of agony of getting his chest waxed in the 40 Year-Old Virgin.  Now, I can’t stop.

Of course, I’ve seen some of the horrible auditions, because there have been some spectacularly bad moments on that program. But an entire episode? Where I actually consciously chose to give some of my quiet, hard-earned evening to Ryan Seacrest, Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez (yeah the last two are new, but still)?? Like, I went out of my way to watch it, and I haven’t missed an episode.

It started by just watching the auditions… Entertaining. Bus crashes and surprise standouts, all.  And Steven Tyler was quite possibly the funniest thing ever, or maybe it was just that he was the off-the-wall counterpoint to Jennifer Lopez’s straightforward sweetness.  I don’t know what happened but here I am, months later, sitting in front of my TV, critiquing with Adena (quite seriously) each performance as it passes.

I’m too invested now. I have to make it to the end. But again, why now, in the tenth season??

I have my favorites, how about you?  I’m so embarrassed.

Awww sheeeiiit…. you’re hooked on Idol? 🙂 Oh well, we all have our guilty TV pleasures (although I never thought this would be one of yours, Mike!). The only show I follow religiously is TMZ. And that’s only because Dawson’s Creek ended several years ago.

Oh, it’s awful Erik. I just can’t stop, I don’t understand! Thankfully, with PVR you can minimize the damage, but seriously. The other show I can’t turn away from currently if I happen to catch it on the ol’ guide is Wipeout.
